Rawleigh Williams of Lunenburg VA is the progenitor

It is said that John Williams born 1792 in Logan Kentucky and his wife Mary "Polly" Garrett are the parents of Curtis Williams born 1832 in Illinois. From the 1850 census of Canaan, Gasconade Co Missouri it would appear to be so, as a Curtis Williams born 1832 Illinois appears there with John and Polly. Their son Rolly (sounds the same as Rawleigh) is visiting with relatives in White Co IL during the 1850 but is home again in 1860 census.

John Williams' father Aaron Williams died 18 December 1838 in White Co Illinois. His children's birth were written in a Bible. I dont have this Bible and I dont know who has it. He married Tabitha Stark. Our John Williams b 1792 names his 3 of his children Aaron, Tabitha and Roley after his brothers and sister. His father and mother were Thomas Williams and Christiana Hightower. His grandfather was Lunenburg VA Rawleigh/Raleigh Williams. Which sounds a lot like Rolly Williams.

Thomas Williams was a Baptist minister in Warren Co, KY along with John Hightower. Because John Hightowers wife is Christiana, it is assumed John & Christiana Hightower are inlaws of Thomas Williams. Thomas WILLIAMS, Curtis WILLIAMS, Aaron BURLESON and John HIGHTOWER lived in GA 1780. Known children of Thomas and Christiana are:

  1. Thomas Simpson Williams may be the son of James Williams?
James Williams and Nancy West did not have a son named Thomas Simpson Williams. James and Nancy's children were:
    Jesse Lewis Williams 1794 – 1865
    Mary Rose "Polly" Williams 1796 – 1852
    Stephen Williams 1798 – 1884
    Amos Williams 1801 – 1876
    Nancy Williams 1803 –
    Melinda Williams 1805 – 1842
    James Williams Jr. 1806 – 1850
Iva Williams 1810 – 1895 (married Edmond Meacham)
    Alvin Williams 1813 –
    Elizabeth "Betsy" Williams 1814 – 1871
    Warren R. Williams 1815 – 1875
Louisa Williams 1819 – 1876 (my great-great grandmother that married Charles Mann)
James married second to Susannah Grissam
    their children were:
    Marrell Washington Williams 1829 – 1890
    Selina A. Williams 1831 – 1880
    James C. "King" Williams 1836 – 1911
I believe James Williams parents were Jenkins Williams and Uriah Marks. Thank You, Patsy Mann Holtz

  2. You may have already discovered your error concerning the 1850 White Co IL census entry for Roley Williams, age 9. He was indeed the son of a John Williams -- but that John Williams died in Aug 1845 (see the Illinois Probate Records database at familysearch.org for White County Probate Journal A, page 145; Journal C, pp 62-64; and Journal D, page 203). The son Roley is enumerated with his mother and her 2nd husband Henry S. Stanly (or Stanley) in 1850. Mary Tidwell married John Williams 24 Dec 1839 in White Co IL, and was married to Henry S. Stanley 28 Mar 1847, also in White County. The Stanley family had moved on to Montgomery Co IL by 1860, and "Riley" Williams is also there, listed as a 19-year-old farm laborer in the household of John D. Cass. He is listed in the 1863 Civil War Draft Registrations as a school teacher in Montgomery Co IL, and appears in the 1870 Montgomery Co IL census as "Rolla" Williams with his half-brother Bedford Stanley. Roley Williams died 10 Sep 1871 in Montgomery Co IL. See archive.org for a biography of Mary Tidwell Williams Stanley on pages 5 & 6 of "Semi-centenarians of Butler Grove Township, Montgomery Co. Ill.," by Rev. T. E. Spilman. It includes details about her marriages, as well as birth and death info for her children.

    1. While researching this Roley who lived with the Stanleys, I also discovered a "Hannah B. Tidwell" b. abt. 1827 in IL, married Roley Williams, b. abt. 1826 in Illinois -- married in 1844 in White, IL. Children Albert, 1848, IL; Mary E. 1850, IL; Susan A. 1852, IL, Lucinda 1858, IL; and John F. 1861, IL. It's tempting to think Hannah and Mary were sisters who married Williams brothers -- but no proof of anything yet and still researching, but very interesting!

  3. I'm also researching this family -- I did a search on Ancestry.com of all Williams's b. Indiana and living in Canaan, Gasconade, MO in 1850. The list comes up as Green Williams, b. abt. 1825 Indiana, Davis Williams, b. abt. 1826 Indiana, Cynthia Williams (Davis' wife) b. abt. 1828, Indiana, JOHN WILLIAMS, b. abt. 1828, Indiana (MY ANCESTOR - married Harriet Spaulding), Elizabeth Williams, b. abt. 1834, Indiana, Delitha Williams, b. abt. 1836, Indiana, Aaron Williams, b. abt. 1838, Indiana and Polly Williams, b. abt. 1840 Indiana. I believe they are all John Sr. & Mary Polly's children. They are all living near or with each other in the 1850 Canaan census. I've traced all their descendants, and my Ancestor John Williams (Jr.) and his descendants remained close to his brothers Green Berry, Curtis, and Aaron's descendants through the 1920s in Vinita, Indian Territory, OK and Creek County, Oklahoma. I had also reached the same conclusion about Roley being in Illinois as Linda Deppner above - this Roley appears to be a different Roley, but I have no explanation as to where our Roley was in the 1850 Canaan census. I can send you a link to my tree on Ancestry -- I also am keeping a Gallery story of all my findings as to how John Jr., Curtis, Aaron & Green Berry's children remained in contact, living near or with each other, for so many years. I can send you a link to my tree on Ancestry. I'm attempting to a "source based only" tree -- so all the information I have found is documented.

  6. I investigated Aaron Williams who married Tabitha Stark on Ancestry.com and found his will, probate date 28 Aug. 1837, in which he mentions ALL of his children listed above, with the notable exception of John Williams, b. 1792 in Kentucky. The only reason John wouldn't be listed on the will was if he died without issue before Aaron's will was made, or if he never existed. Other trees on Ancestry indicate that Aaron did have a son named John, b. 1792 in Kentucky, who died in 1813. Our John was still alive and living in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri in 1860. If he was Aaron's son, he would have been mentioned in his will, even if only to exclude him. That said, the first names of Aaron's children, and of his father Thomas Williams' children are so similar to our John's children's names that it's worth investigating if there may be a connection with that family somewhere.

  7. John Williams & Polly mentioned above appear to actually be John Williams and Mary Hinton -- John Williams was the son of Joseph Williams & Sarah Musick.

Per the book "Genealogy of the Lewis Family in America," by William Terrell Lewis (pages 191 - 193), Joseph & Sarah Musick Williams had the following children: Micajah, James, Rev. Lewis, William Sherley, John Williams, Mary (who married Francis Mattocks), Peter, Arabella (who married William Vaughn), Benjamin & Olive (who married Thomas Winn).

According to the book "History of Maries County, Missouri," by Everett King, which lists NO SOURCES -- it appears to be an "oral family history" -- John Williams & Mary Hinton lived in Franklin County, Missouri in 1850 and Miller, Maries County, Missouri in 1860 -- their children were Micajah, Deliliah, William, Lewis, Mary & John J.

Joseph Williams & Sarah Musick's son John Williams and his wife Polly Hinton actually appear to be living in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri in 1850 & 1860 (page 7 of the 1850 census). All the known surviving children of Joseph Williams & Sarah Musick are also living in Canaan in 1850 & 1860. On the 1850 census, John's sister Mary Williams Mattocks is widowed and living two doors up from John & Polly (with other known family members in between them). His sister Arabella Williams Vaughn is on page 6 of the census, and the widower of his sister Olive Williams (Thomas Winn) is also on page 6 of 1850 Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri census. Also, Mary Hinton's brother, David Hinton, her sister, Winnie Brock, and mother Elizabeth Hinton are on page 9 of the 1850 Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri census. Also, William Cooper, the widower of Mary Sarah Williams, daughter of Lewis Williams is on page 2 of the 1850 census. Many other family members also living in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri in 1850 and later censuses, all around and sometimes next door to John Williams & Polly.

The book "Family Maps of Gasconade County, Missouri," by Gregory A. Boyd, J.D., pages 178-179, shows patents that were issued to John Williams, Francis Mattocks (husband of John's sister, Mary Williams Mattocks), William Vaughn (husband of Arabella Williams Vaughn), Thomas Winn (husband of John's sister Olive Williams Winn), William C. Cooper (husband of Mary Sarah Williams, daughter of Lewis Williams), Lewis Williams & Benjamin F. Williams -- all very close to each other -- and backed up by the families listed on the 1850 Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri census. (Patent Map Group 14, Township 42-N, Range 5-W (5th PM)).

John Williams & Polly Hinton had the following children (all living in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri in 1850): Green Berry, Davis, John Williams (Jr.), Curtis Williams, Elizabeth Williams, Telitha Williams, Mary Williams, Rolla Williams, and Aaron Williams, all b. Indiana, except Curtis.

There are MANY sources that appear to indicate that Joseph Williams & Sarah Musick's son John Williams & his wife Polly Hiton were living in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri and their son was NOT the John Williams & Mary living in Franklin County, Missouri in 1850 and Miller, Maries County, Missouri in 1860, as per the book "History of Maries County, Missouri," by Everett King. There appear to be NO close family members of John Williams or Mary Hinton living near the John Williams & Mary Hinton listed above in Franklin County, Missouri, or Miller, Maries County, Missouri.
