Curtis Williams and his wife Sarah Barham born in Logan Kentucky

Something is tied together now. My question was how did Curtice Williams of Gasconade Co Missouri know Sahah Barham from Greene Co Missouri... and marry her there. Curtis's father John Williams was born in Logan Co Kentucky. So was Sarah Bahram. The families must have known each other.

Curtis and Sarah Williams

Curtis Williams and Sarah R. Barham married in Greene Co Missouri Date:9 Sep 1852 But Curtis Williams lived in Christian Co and Stone co and apparently the Ponce de Leon cemetery where Curtis is buried is right on the county line. Some say it is in Christian Co and others that it is in Stone Co. The area was populated by many Bilyeus. Tennessee had the highest population of Bilyeu families in 1840.  Bilue/Billieu/Billieux and various spellings are French in origin.  Two of Curtis Williams's female children married Bilyeus.  Curtis Williams also lived in Polk Co in 1860 where a Green Berry Williams is in the census, but a different town.

Curtis Williams birth is 9 Sep 1832 in "Illinois" (? his children say Tennesee). His death 19 Jan 1898 in Stone, Missouri. John Witten Bilyeu's brother Jacob Bilyeu married Catherine Elizabeth Williams b 1803 NC, dau of Williams Williams and Sarah Sullens. I dont know if they are related, but the 2 families of Williams and Bilyeu seem to have known each other and married to each other.

JACOB BILYEU (ISAAC7, JOHN6 BILLIOU/BILYEU, PETER5, ISAAC4, PIERRE3, JEAN2, THOMAS1) was born 1803 in Overton Co., TN, and died 1852 in Carroll County, Ak // buried at the head of Big Indian Creek. Jacob built a grist mill on Big Indian Creek, below the spring site. he married Catherine Elizabeth Williams b 1803 day of Williams Williams and Sarah Sullens. They appear in in the 1850 census.   1850, James Twp. Taney Co. MO # 205

John Bilue Postmaster 1837-1838 Kings River est. 30 Dec 1833  Jacob Bilue  Isaac Bulue
John Witten Bilyeu, was a resident of Arkansas for a period of time. He was the postmaster of Kings River in what is now the Kingston Area of Madison County from 1837-1838. John Witten Bileu was appointed as first Postmaster for Kings River, Arkansas on 7 September 1837. He was also the "foster" parent of the infamous Alf Bolin, a thug who raped, robbed and left a trail of murder victims over a wide area between Ozark, Missouri and Harrison, Arkansas.  John Bilyeu was a slave owner before the Civil War and rumor has it that he raised them like cattle for sale. The Bilyeu family were a fairly interesting lot. Many stories are recounted in "Tales of the Bull Creek Country."  John Bilyeu and wife, Sarah Frances Harp, are buried in Spokane Cemetery, Spokane, Missouri.

I dont know for sure who Curtis's father really was. He gave his children very unusual names and the naming patterns of the family where he seems to be living in 1850 do not match the names Curtis gave his family.

John Wiliiams married Mary "Polly" Garrett: 24 OCT 1840 in Spencer Co., IN.
In this 1850 census son Rollins "Rolla/Roley" W. Williams is with the Stanly family in White, Illinois- probably where son Curtis was born. Maybe Mary Stanly is a relative left behind. Roley was b: 26 APR 1842 in Troy, Spencer County, Indiana. So it looks like the route was Spencer Co, Indiana to White Co., Illinois....to Missouri.

Curtis Williams says he was born in Illinois but he may have said that so as not to appear he was from the South, to avoid trouble. Some children say he was born in Tennessee.

Children of Curtis Williams and Sarah R. Barham
John Williams b 28 Jun 1853 - Greene, MO Death:  13 Feb 1922 - Cottage Grove, Lane, Oregon  Spouse:  Amanda Jane Berry died 29 Feb 1924 in Lane, Oregon (I guess they eventually went on the Oregon Trail.)
Thomas H. Williams b  February 1855 lived in Stone, Missouri 1900, married Dec 1875 to 23 year old F. Caledonia Bilyeu b 11 Feb 1852
Greenberry Williams b  1856 (G.B. in census) died 28 Nov 1878 - Christian, Missouri, married 30 Dec. 1875 to 16 year old Hannah Elizabeth "Polly" Bilyeu ,born 1859 according to census data, appear together as GB and Polly Williams in 1876 census saying she is 18-21 years of age, had one child Mary Green Williams b 28 Nov 1878 and according to a Bilyeu site she had a "Baby Boy Williams" before Mary Green Williams was born. Polly married 6 months later 27 July 1879 to William Hilton. Polly's exact birth date is uncertain.  However, about the era 1935 and while she was alive it was common knowledge and undisputed by her that she was a Cherokee orphan. She was visited throughout her lifetime by Jess Oliver a full blood Cherokee, he claimed her as a first cousin. She appeared to be Indian.  She was raised as a BILYEU.
Fidella Williams 1859 (probably Fidelio is meant) was still alive in 1870 but dont find him after that. Maybe he and Greenberry got sick at the same time and died.
Leonidas Marion Williams b April 1861  Leonidas Marion married Nancy Lavina Henry 27 May 1884 in Stone Co MO- she died 1933 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mostone/cemetery/neill_w.html
Curtis Freeman Williams b 21 March 1863  Curtis Freeman  died 13 Feb 1937 Joplin, Jasper Co., MO, married September 21, 1884 in Stone Co., Missouri to Louisa Vandalee Couch - the daughter of Orrell Gist Couch and Nannie M. Wilson. She was born February 27, 1868 in Webster Co., MO. She died February 4, 1902 at Creek Nation, Indian Territory, Okema (now Okfuskee Co.), OK.

Greenberry Williams
b ca 1857 died 28 Nov 1878 - Christian, Missouri, married 15 year old Hannah Elizabeth "Polly" Bilyeu on 30 Dec. 1875. Although her death certificate says 1861, and her stone says 1860, these are incorrect according to the multiple census data for her. She was born January 1859 in my opinion. Greenberry "Green" and she had one child: Mary Green Williams b 28 Nov 1878. Green Williams died young of pneumonia.  He was working outside building a cabin and became hot and cooled off in a creek. After Greenberry died Polly married William J. Hilton. Hilton had 2 children by another marriage and Polly did not want them, so she also gave Mary Green Williams her daughter to relatives to raise. Although on the 1880 census Christian Co the 3 children total are living with them. So maybe each gave into the other or it was later decided or was only thought about.

James Freeman Barham got his middle name from his mother's mother's maiden name Freeman. Note about Curtis William's wife Sarah R. Barham's grandfather James Barham RWS:

Just prior to this death in Greene Co Missouri, James Freeman Williams was cited by President Abraham Lincoln as one of the last surviving Rev War soldiers! During the war his job was to take care of herds of beef cattle for the army.  http://revwarapps.org/s16614.pdf  He moved to Greene Co Missouri about 1846 to join children who had migrated about 1837 , ending up in  Greene County, Missouri after KY & TN.

"James Barham was a great favorite of people in Greene County for he was a fine talker and told of his many war adventures and pioneer days in North Carolina and Kentucky. He also delighted in hunting and fishing and kept a pack of hounds to help him in his hunting excursions when he lived in Kentucky.....It is said that at 100 years of age he could still ride horseback for a distance of 20 miles. It is further stated by family members that he never wore spectacles (eyeglasses) and at 100 years of age could shoot game at the distance of 100 yards."
